You could have heard a pin drop when Dr. Gary E. Fraser gave an online lecture to 130 health professionals at DVF’s Nutrition Conference three years ago. Not because his findings were controversial, but because they were far stronger than participants had expected.
We have now invited Dr. Fraser to Denmark to present his research to a wider audience. Dr. Fraser will visit Aalborg, Aarhus, Odense, Næstved, and Copenhagen in June, and admission is free for DVF members.
About Dr. Fraser and the Adventist Health Studies
Dr. Fraser is the lead researcher behind the world’s largest studies of the health effects of a plant-based diet. He has played a central role in the Adventist Health Studies – the world’s largest study examining the health effects of vegetarian and vegan diets compared with diets that include meat.
The Adventist Studies stand out from all other dietary studies in three crucial ways:
- Exceptionally large study population: With more than 40,000 participants following vegetarian diets and overand more than 40,000 consuming meat, the studies are far larger than most comparable investigations.
- Cleaner data: Adventists are predominantly non-smokers, and many abstain from alcohol. This allowed researchers to examine dietary effects with fewer major confounding factors than in many other population studies.
- Lifelong habits: Many participants have followed plant-based diets for decades. This provides unusually strong insight into potential long-term health effects.
In the Netflix series Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones, you can learn more about the Adventists and their health later life.
I enjoy investigating what lies behind the differences in health outcomes seen among people with different lifestyles. My primary question is whether a vegetarian diet is safe, and whether it might even be superior to a conventional diet.
In my lecture, I will discuss risk factors such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and look at both longevity and the most common causes of death. I will also touch on the biology and examine how the bodies of vegetarians differ from those of people who eat meat.
